Search Engine Optimisation (SEO)
Also known as: Search engine optimization
In short
Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the practice of improving a website's structure, content and authority so it ranks higher in unpaid search engine results for relevant queries.
SEO covers three broad areas: technical SEO (making a site fast, crawlable and correctly indexed), on-page SEO (writing content that genuinely answers what a searcher is asking, structured with clear headings and metadata), and off-page SEO (earning links and mentions that signal authority and trust to search engines). Google and Bing use hundreds of signals across these areas to decide which pages best deserve a place on the results page.
In the Caribbean, SEO has a distinctive shape. Search volumes for many local queries are small, competition for the highest-value terms — tourism, real estate, financial services — is often dominated by large international aggregators, and connectivity varies enough that mobile page speed carries extra weight. Local signals such as consistent business listings, genuine reviews and region-specific content tend to matter more than they would in a saturated market.
Modern SEO increasingly overlaps with generative engine optimisation, since AI answer engines draw heavily on the same crawled and indexed web that traditional search relies on.
