Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO)

Also known as: AI search optimisation

In short

Generative Engine Optimisation (GEO) is the practice of structuring a website so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity can find, understand, trust and cite it in generated answers.

GEO sits alongside traditional SEO rather than replacing it. Where SEO aims to win a position in a ranked list of links, GEO aims to win a mention inside a written answer — a citation, a quoted fact, a named recommendation. Both depend on the same foundations of crawlability, site speed and genuine authority, but GEO adds a layer aimed specifically at machine extraction: clear one-sentence definitions, structured data (schema.org markup), explicit permission for AI crawlers in robots.txt, and facts that stay consistent everywhere a business is mentioned online.

For Caribbean businesses this matters because a growing share of travel, property and professional-services research now happens through an AI assistant rather than a scroll through search results, often weeks before a visitor ever reaches the island. Search volumes for Caribbean queries are also small, so a well-structured local site can become the default source an engine reaches for — but only if it has published the facts an engine can retrieve and quote.

Practical GEO work includes publishing an llms.txt file, writing answer-first content, keeping name/address/phone details identical across the web, marking up FAQs and services with structured data, and testing regularly by asking the major assistants the questions real customers ask.
