SEO vs GEO: what is the difference, and which does your business need?
Search engine optimisation (SEO) works to win a position in a ranked list of links. Generative engine optimisation (GEO) works to win a mention inside an AI-written answer. They share most of their foundations — crawlability, speed, structure, accurate entity information — but they are judged differently, and a Caribbean business competing for a small pool of searches usually needs both rather than a choice between them.
·
SEO optimises a page to rank in a list of search results; GEO optimises passages within a page so AI answer engines can retrieve, verify and cite them. Most businesses need both, because the same technical foundations serve each.
SEO vs GEO, compared.
| Criterion | SEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| What it optimises for | Position in a ranked list of links | Being quoted inside a generated answer |
| Unit of competition | The page | The passage within a page |
| Primary audience | Crawlers and human searchers | Retrieval systems and language models |
| Content style rewarded | Comprehensive, keyword-aligned pages | Specific, checkable, self-contained statements |
| Structured data role | Helpful — enables rich results | Central — resolves entities and confirms facts |
| How results are measured | Rankings, impressions, clicks, conversions | Citations, brand mentions in answers, assisted enquiries |
| Typical time to effect | Weeks to months | Days to weeks once content is re-crawled |
| Biggest failure mode | Thin pages targeting the same query | Vague marketing prose with nothing extractable |
Choose SEO when
- You still get most enquiries from Google's blue links and maps.
- You have unresolved technical problems: slow pages, broken indexing, duplicate content.
- You compete for local service queries where a map pack decides the click.
Choose GEO when
- Your buyers research with ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or Perplexity before contacting anyone.
- You sell considered services where the AI answer shapes the shortlist.
- Your site ranks reasonably but is never named when an assistant is asked to recommend a provider.
Our verdict.
For nearly every Caribbean business the honest answer is that GEO is not an alternative to SEO — it is an additional set of requirements layered on the same foundations. Fix crawl access, speed, information architecture and accurate business information first, because both disciplines fail without them.
Once the foundations hold, the divergence matters. SEO work continues to target queries and pages. GEO work rewrites individual passages so each one contains a clear definition, a specific figure, a named place or a dated fact, and backs them with structured data that resolves who you are, where you operate and what you sell.
Measure them separately. Rankings and organic clicks tell you how SEO is going. Prompting the major assistants with the questions your buyers actually ask, and recording whether you are named and linked, tells you how GEO is going.

SEO vs GEO, answered.
Is GEO replacing SEO?
No. AI answers are an additional discovery surface, not a replacement for search results, and the assistants themselves draw heavily on conventional search indexes. A site that cannot be crawled or is slow will fail at both. The practical shift is that being ranked is no longer sufficient: your pages also have to contain passages that can be quoted safely, and structured data that confirms your identity, location and services.
Which should a small Caribbean business do first?
Do the shared foundations first: fast, crawlable, mobile-first pages, accurate and consistent business information, and correct structured data. That single body of work improves rankings and AI citation at the same time. After that, prioritise GEO if your buyers research with assistants before enquiring, and SEO if your enquiries still arrive predominantly through Google search and maps.
How do I know whether AI engines cite my site?
Ask the assistants directly and record the results. Write down the ten questions a prospective customer would ask, put them to ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Perplexity, and note whether you are named, whether the description is accurate, and whether a link is given. Repeat monthly. Also check your server or analytics logs for AI crawler user agents such as GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and Google-Extended, which tells you whether the engines are collecting your content at all.
Does GEO require different content, or can existing pages be adapted?
Most existing pages can be adapted. The usual changes are structural rather than wholesale rewrites: add a one-sentence answer directly beneath each heading, replace vague claims with specific and dated facts, break long prose into passages that stand alone, add an FAQ section covering how you are genuinely asked about, and mark the page up correctly. New content is worth commissioning only where a question your buyers ask has no page at all.
