When people most need to know whether you are open, that is precisely when a locally hosted site is most likely to be unreachable.

The historic argument for on-island hosting — that local visitors get faster pages — has largely been answered by content delivery networks, which cache your pages at edge locations and serve most requests without a round trip to the origin at all. A CDN stores copies of your pages, images and scripts at edge locations around the world, so a visitor in the region is generally served from a nearby cache rather than the origin server. What actually determines perceived speed on Caribbean mobile networks is page weight — oversized images, excessive scripts and unoptimised fonts — far more than the physical location of the origin.

What did Hurricane Irma teach about hosting?
